The Values of Citizenship: Disparity of Thought and Reality

Ideally, the foundations of the citizenship are based on the coexistence between people of the same nation on the basis of rights and duties and the rule of law, without any discrimination emerging from belief, ethnic, sectarian, political or linguistic affiliation.

The concept of “citizenship” had crystallized and gained its practical and legal form in the context of political and intellectual developments in human societies that focused on protecting individual rights within the governance of state, regardless of the religious, sectarian or ethnic backgrounds.

Despite all the literature, legislations and practices made in this regard, The world today is still in dire need of controlling and consolidating the foundations and principles of true citizenship that accommodates everyone, especially in light of the growing displays of hatred and racism within a single nation and its consequences of conflicts and wars that tear apart the fabric of societies, weaken their strength and threaten their collective identity.

Considering this context, Siraj Center for Research and Studies in London is organizing an international e-symposium with title:

“The Values of Citizenship: Disparity of Thought and Reality”, on Wednesday, January 13, 2021

The symposium is intended to be devoted to the approach and intellectually contribute to the following pressing questions:

• How are the values ​​of citizenship and positive integration instilled in the society in challenge of the of intellectual, ideological and religious conflicts?
• How to balance between citizenship values of right, inclusion and duty on one hand and the growing pressure of globalization to marginalise local identities?
• Is secularism in practice and legislation considered to be the only base for modern citizenship?
• Cultural, religious and ethnic minorities; should it prioritised and how in relevance to citizenship?
• What place has citizenship issues assumed in contemporary Islamic thought?

For such questions, Siraj Center for Research and Studies hope to address them in this international symposium.
